If you are starting EC2 instances, you may receive an error message like the following:

Your quota allows for 0 more running instance(s). You requested at least 1

By default, all AWS accounts have a limit of 20 running instances at any time per region. If you attempt to start another one, even if it already existed in the stopped state, you will receive this error message.

To resolve this issue, you can do any of the following:

  1. Stop one of your other running instances

  2. Contact AWS support and request your running EC2 instances quota limit be raised.
